But the God of all grace - The Fountain of infinite compassion, mercy, and goodness. Mohammed has conveyed this fine description of the Divine Being in the words with which he commences every surat or chapter of his Koran, two excepted; viz.;

Bismillahi arrahmani arraheemi .

Of which the best translation that can be given is that of the apostle, In the name of the God of all grace; the God who is the most merciful and the most compassionate, who is an exuberant Fountain of love and compassion to all his intelligent offspring.

Who hath called us - By the preaching of the Gospel.

Unto his eternal glory - To the infinite felicity of the heavenly state.

By Christ Jesus - Through the merit of his passion and death, by the influence of his Holy Spirit, by the precepts of his Gospel, and by the splendor of his own example.

After that ye have suffered a while - Ολιγον παθοντας· Having suffered a little time; that is, while ye are enduring these persecutions, God will cause all to work together for your good.

Make you perfect - Καταρτισει, στηριξει, σθενωσει, θεμελιωσει· All these words are read in the future tense by the best MSS. and versions.

He will make you perfect. - Καταρτισει· Put you in complete joint as the timbers of a building.

Stablish - Στηριξει· Make you firm in every part; adapt you strongly to each other, so that you may be mutual supports, the whole building being one in the Lord.

Strengthen - Σθενωσει· Cramp and bind every part, so that there shall be no danger of warping, splitting, or falling.

Settle - Θεμελιωσει· Cause all to rest so evenly and firmly upon the best and surest foundation, that ye may grow together to a holy temple in the Lord: in a word, that ye may be complete in all the mind that was in Christ; supported in all your trials and difficulties; strengthened to resist and overcome all your enemies; and after all abide, firmly founded, in the truth of grace. All these phrases are architectural; and the apostle has again in view the fine image which he produced 1 Peter 2:5; (note).

But the God of all grace - The God who imparts all needful grace. It was proper in their anticipated trials to direct them to God, and to breathe forth in their behalf an earnest and affectionate prayer that they might be supported. A prayer of this kind by an apostle would also be to them a sort of pledge or assurance that the needed grace would be granted them.

Who hath called us unto his eternal glory - And who means, therefore, that we shall be saved. As he has called us to his glory, we need not apprehend that he will leave or forsake us. On the meaning of the word called, see the notes at Ephesians 4:1.

After that ye have suffered a while - After you have suffered as long as he shall appoint. The Greek is, “having suffered a little,” and may refer either to time or degree. In both respects the declaration concerning afflictions is true. They are short, compared with eternity; they are light, compared with the exceeding and eternal weight of glory. See the notes at 2 Corinthians 4:16-18.

Make you perfect - By means of your trials. The tendency of affliction is to make us perfect.

Stablish - The Greek word means “to set fast; to fix firmly; to render immovable,” Luke 16:26; Luke 9:51; Luke 22:32; Romans 1:11; Romans 16:25; 1 Thessalonians 3:2, 1 Thessalonians 3:13, et al.

Strengthen - Give you strength to bear all this.

Settle you - Literally, found you, or establish you on a firm foundation - θεμελιώσες themeliōsesThe allusion is to a house which is so firmly fixed on a foundation that it will not be moved by winds or floods. Compare the notes at Matthew 7:24 ff.

In conclusion, the apostle prays to God for them, as the God of all grace. Perfect implies their progress towards perfection. Stablish imports the curing of our natural lightness and inconstancy. Strengthen has respect to the growth of graces, especially where weakest and lowest. Settle signifies to fix upon a sure foundation, and may refer to Him who is the Foundation and Strength of believers. These expressions show that perseverance and progress in grace are first to be sought after by every Christian. The power of these doctrines on the hearts, and the fruits in the lives, showed who are partakers of the grace of God. The cherishing and increase of Christian love, and of affection one to another, is no matter of empty compliment, but the stamp and badge of Jesus Christ on his followers. Others may have a false peace for a time, and wicked men may wish for it to themselves and to one another; but theirs is a vain hope, and will come to nought. All solid peace is founded on Christ, and flows from him.

10. The God of all grace. Rather, “the God of every grace.” The Father is the source of every good quality (cf. James 1:17; 1 Peter 4:10). The reference to God is an antithesis to “your adversary,” who is the chief subject of ch. 5:8, 9. The apostle has warned his readers about the devil’s operations, but now reminds them that God has not left them to their own human resources.

Who hath called. Or, “who called,” a reference to the invitation given by the gospel message, or, in a wider sense, to God’s original call implicit in the plan of salvation (see on Rom. 8:28-30; 1 Thess. 5:23, 24).

Us. Textual evidence favors (cf. p. 10) the reading “you.”

His eternal glory. See on Rom. 8:30; cf. John 12:28; 17:22.

By Christ Jesus. Literally, “in Christ Jesus.” Textual evidence favors (cf. p. 10) the omission of the name “Jesus.” God calls us through His Son (cf. on 2 Cor. 5:17). Some commentators prefer to link the words “in Christ” to the phrase “eternal glory,” believing Peter is speaking of the eternal glory revealed in Christ.

After that ye have suffered. That is, experienced the impending “fiery trial” (ch. 4:12). Peter does not minimize present suffering, but looks beyond it (cf. on Heb. 12:2). The NT freely acknowledges the prospect of suffering (Matt. 5:10-12; 10:17, 18; Rom. 8:17, 36; 2 Tim. 2:12).

A while. Or, “a little while” (see on Rev. 12:12). Although persecution may appear interminable at the time it is experienced, its duration is brief in the light of eternity, and the Christian may learn to view it from that perspective (cf. on 2 Cor. 4:17).

Make you perfect. Textual evidence favors (cf. p. 10) the reading “shall perfect,” omitting the word “you” (see on Matt. 5:48). The verb translated “to perfect” (katartizÅÂ) is elsewhere rendered “to mend,” “to repair” (Matt. 4:21; Mark 1:19), “to frame,” that is, to put in order, to arrange (Heb. 11:3), but is here used in an ethical sense, “to outfit completely.” God Himself (the Greek is thus emphatic) will equip the Christian to endure all the assaults Satan may bring against him.

Stablish. Gr. stÄ“rizÅÂ (see on Rom. 16:25; cf. Rom. 1:11; 2 Thess. 2:17; 3:3).

Strengthen. See Eph. 3:16; Phil. 4:13; 2 Tim. 4:17; see on 1 Tim. 1:12.

Settle. Gr. themelioÅÂ, “to lay the foundation,” from themelios, “foundation,” and hence, “to make stable.” In this verse Peter stresses the fact that God will endue the believer with everything needful to withstand the devil and his human agents, the persecutors.
