They cast up a bank against the city - The word סללה solelah , which we render bank, means, most probably, a battering engine of some kind, or a tower overlooking the walls, on which archers and slingers could stand and annoy the inhabitants, while others of the besiegers could proceed to sap the walls. That it cannot be a bank that stood in the trench, is evident from the circumstance thus expressed.

The trench - The “pomoerium,” or fortified space outside the wall. When the mound was planted in the pomoerium the battering engines were able to approach close to the wall to make a breach.

A great deal of mischief would be prevented, if contending parties would understand one another. Let both sides be undeceived. The single condition of peace is, the surrender of the traitor. It is so in God's dealing with the soul, when besieged by conviction and distress; sin is the traitor; the beloved lust is the rebel: part with that, cast away the transgression, and all shall be well. 15. Besieged him. Sheba had had time enough to establish himself in a fortified town that could be taken only be siege.
Cast up a bank. See 2 Kings 19:32 ; Isa. 37:33 . This was a common method of siege warfare in the ancient Orient. The weakest part of a wall was the part near the top, which might be made of only mud bricks, whereas the bottom would be of stone. A bank of earth would be thrown up against the wall, and siege engines, if such were employed, mounted on it. In this way a hole could be battered through the wall and the city entered.
Trench. chel , “a rampart.” Some take chel to refer to a fortified area between a lower outer wall and the main wall of the city, or the outer wall itself, or the glacis, others, by metonymy, to a moat or ditch. With a bank thrown up in this area, against the main wall itself, the besiegers would be in position to make their final attack.
Battered the wall. It is doubtful whether the forces of David were in possession of siege engines, such as battering-rams. These were common in later years with the Assyrian and Babylonian armies and gave these peoples their great success.

The overthrow of Absalom did not at once bring peace to the kingdom. So large a part of the nation had joined in revolt that David would not return to his capital and resume his authority without an invitation from the tribes. In the confusion that followed Absalom's defeat there was no prompt and decided action to recall the king, and when at last Judah undertook to bring back David, the jealousy of the other tribes was roused, and a counter-revolution followed. This, however, was speedily quelled, and peace returned to Israel.
