Nahash the Ammonite - In the Vulgate this chapter begins thus: Et factum est quasi post mensem , "And it came to pass about a month after." This addition appears also in the principal copies of the Septuagint; though it is wanting in the Complutensian edition, both in the Greek and Latin, and is not acknowledged by any of the Oriental versions. But it is in Josephus, and probably was inserted from him into some copies of the Septuagint, and thence into the Vulgate. It appears to be of very little authority.
We know little about Nahash; there was a king of this name among the Ammonites in the time of David, 2 Samuel 10:2 , but probably not the same person. Nahash might have been a common name of the Ammonitish kings.

Nahash was king of the children of Ammon, as appears from 1 Samuel 12:12 . He seems to have been connected with the family of David, since Abigail, David‘s sister, was “the daughter (perhaps granddaughter) of Nahash” 2 Samuel 17:25 ; 1 Chronicles 2:16-17 ; and, perhaps, in consequence of this connection, he and his family were very friendly to David 2 Samuel 17:27 .
Jabesh-Gilead must have been re-populated after its destruction (see marginal reference). The Ammonites and Moabites resented the possession of Gilead by the Israelites Judges 10:6-18 ; 11 .

The first fruit of Saul's government was the rescue of Jabesh-gilead from the Ammonites. To save their lives, men will part with liberty, and even consent to have their eyes put out; is it then no wisdom to part with that sin which is as dear to us as our right eye, rather than to be cast into hell-fire? See the faith and confidence of Saul, and, grounded thereon, his courage and resolution. See also his activity in this business. When the Spirit of the Lord comes upon men, it will make them expert, even without experience. When zeal for the glory of God, and love for the brethren, urge men to earnest efforts, and when God is pleased to help, great effects may speedily be produced.

1. Nahash the Ammonite. The name Nahash is the familiar Hebrew word for “serpent.” The serpent was a prominent decoration in the heathen temples of Palestine. The children of Israel had seen fit to preserve the brazen serpent after their experience with the poisonous reptiles in the Wilderness of Zin, on their departure from Kadesh (Num. 20:1 ; 21:5-9 ; 2 Kings 18:4 ). Seeing the importance placed upon the snake in all the religions of their neighbors, the Israelites before long were also venerating the serpent that they thought had saved them in the wilderness ( Eze. 8:7-12 ). Later, in the days of Hezekiah, the brazen serpent was destroyed because of such worship (2 Kings 18:4 ). Inasmuch as personal names were frequently compounded with those of various deities, Nahash was evidently given a name implying certain characteristics of the serpent, such as wisdom, cunning, and craftiness.
Jabesh-gilead. Scholars had previously assigned this town to the hills overlooking the Wadi YÄÂbis (Jabesh) 7 (11.5 ) to the east of the river Jordan. But this would have been too far for the men of Jabesh-gilead to carry the bodies of Saul and Jonathan the same night they took the impaled torsos of these men down from the city wall of Beth-shan ( 31:11-13 ). The archeologist Nelson Glueck found several definite lines of evidence that led him to identify Jabesh-gilead with the modern mounds of Tell el-Meqbereh and Tell AbÅ« Kharaz , 2 2/3 (4.3 ) east of the Jordan, overlooking the river Yabis after it emerges from its deep gorge in the hills of Gilead and flows westward toward its union with the Jordan (The River Jordan, 159-167). This city had been the home of the 400 virgins whose parents were slain because they did not participate in the civil war against Benjamin, and who were given as wives to the remnant of that tribe after its almost total destruction (Judges 21:8-14 ).
Many years earlier than Nahash, Israel had been in subjection to the Ammonites for 18 years. It would be natural that the Ammonites, still resenting their defeat at the hands of Jephthah, would be looking for an opportunity to regain control of Gilead. To complete their triumph, they cut off the head of Saul and stripped him of his armor; then the head and the armor, reeking with blood, were sent to the country of the Philistines as a trophy of victory, “to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.” The armor was finally put in “the house of Ashtaroth,” while the head was fastened in the temple of Dagon. Thus the glory of the victory was ascribed to the power of these false gods, and the name of Jehovah was dishonored.
