45. Which lothed their husbands. The identification of these husbands is obscure. Some have conjectured that God here represents Himself as the husband, not only of Israel, but also of the other nations. In their case also idolatry would be apostasy from God, who had given to them a revelation of Himself. God is a God of all the world and not of Israel only. He claims the allegiance of all mankind, first because He created man, and second because He has given to all a measure of revelation sufficient for intelligent worship. Jesus is “the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world” (John 1:9; Rom. 1:20; Acts 14:17).
